In 2019, as part of our commitment to continually advancing our prehospital care, we launched our blood program to bring another vital component of lifesaving care directly to our patients.
In partnership with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the program ensures that patients in critical need can receive life-saving blood transfusions before they ever reach the hospital. Now, what began as a collaborative effort has become a core part of our operations.
As of fall 2025, our team has reached a remarkable milestone: the 1,000th unit of blood given to a patient in need.

By carrying blood products aboard our helicopters and ground ambulances, our crews can begin transfusions during transport — buying precious minutes that can mean the difference between life and death.
To date, more than 300 patients have benefited directly from this program.
Beyond its impact on patients, the program has also demonstrated incredible efficiency — managing nearly 4,700 units of blood with less than 0.4% waste, ensuring that unused blood is returned to Brigham for other patients in need.
To support this program and other prehospital blood initiatives in the region, please consider donating blood at your local blood drive.
