Our Capabilities

Delivering the Highest Standard of Critical Care, Wherever It’s Needed

Boston MedFlight brings the expertise and resources of a hospital intensive care unit (ICU) directly to patients—wherever they are and whenever we’re needed. Whether at the scene of an emergency or transferring a patient between hospitals, our teams ensure seamless, patient-centered care during some of the most critical moments of a person’s life.

Our teams provide care that goes beyond basic emergency response. See how our care compares.

Advanced Critical Care, Anywhere It’s Needed

Our clinical teams are specially trained to care for the most seriously ill or injured patients—whether in the air or on the road. Each transport mission is staffed by a critical care nurse and a critical care paramedic, both equipped to manage high-acuity patients across a wide range of complex conditions.

With access to life-saving medications, procedures, and technology, our teams deliver hospital-level care in real-time, even in the most unpredictable environments.

Expert Care for Every Patient

Our teams care for patients of all ages—from the tiniest premature infants to elderly adults—across a range of medical conditions, including:

  • Adult and pediatric trauma
  • Complex medical conditions
  • Cardiac and stroke emergencies
  • Interfacility transfers for specialty care
  • High-risk obstetric and neonatal care

As the busiest provider of neonatal and pediatric transport in Massachusetts, our teams offer expertise in caring for critically ill children, and we train extensively for these scenarios. Ensuring we are ready when called upon.

Prepared for the Most Critical Scenarios

When every second counts, our teams are always ready to manage even the most complex and time-sensitive medical emergencies. At the bedside or during transport, we provide advanced care for a range of serious conditions, including:

  • Severe respiratory failure, supported by the most advanced transport ventilator available including the ability to deliver inhaled pulmonary vasodilators like nitric oxide and epoprostenol
  • Life-threatening cardiac events, stabilized with medications, external and transvenous pacemakers, and cardiac assist devices including IABP (Balloon Pump), Impella, and ECMO
  • Critical neonatal and pediatric illness, using Isolettes, ventilators, and infusion pumps specifically designed to support pediatric critical care
  • Neurologic emergencies, such as stroke or seizures, managed with airway support, sedation, and interventions to support brain perfusion
  • Major trauma, including brain injuries and internal bleeding, managed with rapid transport to trauma centers, advanced airway management, thoracostomy capabilities, portable ultrasound, and access to onboard blood products—including two units each of packed red blood cells and plasma carried on every transport
  • Sepsis and septic shock, treated with IV fluids, antibiotics, medications for blood pressure support, and mechanical ventilation

To deliver this level of care during transport, our mobile ICUs—both in the air and on the ground—are equipped with the same advanced tools you’d find in a hospital setting, including:

  • Portable ultrasound for real-time diagnostics
  • Point-of-Care Testing for Blood Gas and electrolytes
  • Video laryngoscopy to support safe and effective airway management of all age groups
  • In-transit blood product administration
  • And many others…

Our job is to make sure every patient—no matter how complex their condition—gets to the right care safely, and in the best possible condition for what’s next.
