Our mission at Boston MedFlight has always been to provide the highest quality critical care transport. One of the principles that shape how we fulfill that mission, care for patients, and operate as an organization is doing the greatest good for the most people.
It is also why, after a long and thoughtful evaluation, we have made the decision to wind down operation of our fixed wing transport service at this time. Ultimately, we concluded that we are unable to capture the volume necessary to offset our operating costs for this service line.
This decision will allow us to refocus our efforts where we can make the most meaningful difference right now. This includes continuing to enhance our operations, strengthen our efficiency, and grow and advance our rotor wing and ground critical care services for which we were recently named the Association of Air Medical Services’ (AAMS) Program of the Year—services that are stronger than ever and fully unaffected by this decision.
In the midst of our 40th anniversary, we also can’t help but think about our long-term legacy. To us, that means continuing to set the standard in our industry, answer the call when minutes matter, and provide lifesaving care to anyone in need no matter their circumstances, which, includes providing more than $7 million in free and unreimbursed care each year—an impressive and certainly not insignificant number for a nonprofit funded in large part by the generosity of people in communities we serve.
We are so grateful to everyone on the team who has worked on and contributed to our fixed wing program over the last several years. They helped us grow, learn, and get stronger as an organization. And of course, we’re committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the few employees directly affected by this decision.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I truly believe Boston MedFlight is one of the best programs in the world and I am so proud of the men and women who have such an important impact of patients’ lives every day.
Sincerely,
Maura Hughes
